 CRG
Partner in Forming 3rd Frontier Program PVIC Center
In December 2006 the Ohio Third Frontier program
announced the award for the new Wright Center for Photovoltaics
Innovation and Commercialization (PVIC). This new center will
include two major hubs of photovoltaic (solar cell) research,
development, and commercialization activities located at the
University of Toledo and The Ohio State University. The program
is intended to advance the study and use of photovoltaics,
the process by which the energy in sunlight is converted into
electricity. Photovoltaic cells, or solar cells, capture photons
from sunlight and convert them into electrons to generate
electricity. The project is also aimed at supporting development
of new companies and products, enhancing Ohio’s world-class
research activities, and creating high-tech, well-paying jobs.
CRG is among the 20 or so Ohio industrial and
not-for-profit partners involved in the proposal efforts.
The $18.3 million budget for the center includes projects
that focus on research into advanced materials to be used
in constructing solar cell arrays, development of those solar
cell arrays, prototyping and demonstrating various system
components, development and installation of a complete system,
and graduate level education and consumer awareness. It also
aims at supporting development of new companies and products,
enhancing Ohio’s world-class research activities, and
creating high-tech and well-paying jobs. (11-01-2007)
