CRG Helps Create Ohio Center for
Multifunctional Polymer
Nanomaterials and Devices (CMPND)
Ohio Lieutenant Governor Bruce Johnson announced
Third Frontier Project awards that will help accelerate the
commercialization of new products and strengthen Ohio’s
role in the knowledge economy. Two of the projects to be funded
are based in part on work that will be conducted in the Dayton
area.
Ten Dayton-area businesses and institutions,
including Cornerstone Research Group, will utilize a $22.5
million Wright Centers of Innovation (WCI) grant to create
the Ohio Center for Multifunctional Nanomaterials and Devices
(CMPND). The grant will provide for the acquisition of highly
advanced equipment to develop new materials that will improve
the strength and durability of components that will be part
of automobiles and other manufactured products. CMPND will
include a broad-based research, business and outreach program
centered at OSU with regional sites at the University of Akron
and the University of Dayton, with more than 50 company collaborators
across Ohio.
Sharell Mikesell, executive director for the
Ohio Polymer Strategy Council, said CMPND will drive the creation
of thousands of jobs and reinforce Ohio's existing 140,000-plus
employment base in polymers. "This will allow Ohio to
keep ahead of the competition and stay on the elite edge of
the polymer and advanced materials industry," Mikesell
said, also noting that the state of Ohio currently ranks number
one in these industries. (5-10-2005)
