CRG's HALO Unmanned Air Vehicle Featured in Composites Word
Composites World published an article about technologies featured at the 2010 AUVSI trade show in Denver, Colorado, which was held Aug 24-27. The article mentions CRG's second-generation autonomous unmanned air vehicle, called HALO (hovering autonomous low-observable).
The article described CRG's HALO as "...a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) airborne sensing system... A robust all-carbon composite round structure almost 2 ft/0.6m in diameter with a centrally mounted, rechargable-battery-powered co-axial, counter-rotating ducted fan, was paired with its similar but smaller predecessor. Targeted to law-enforcement and fire/rescue first responders, the remotely piloted surveillance craft are designed to negotiate labyrinthine urban environments under circumstances dangerous to human agents."
The market for autonomous unmanned vehicles is expanding quickly as the technology matures. According to the article, "Composites are working their way into more unmanned systems as autonomous operation puts greater demand on this burgeoning market." Read more. (8-30-10)

CRG Hosts Tours for STEM Center Teachers
 CRG
is proud to be an industry partner with the Dayton Regional STEM
Center. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The STEM Center brings local K-12 teachers together with higher
education and business partners to create problem-based learning
lessons. CRG's Chrysa Theodore volunteers as an industry partner
STEM Fellow at the STEM Center.
Recently, CRG hosted tours for STEM Fellow teachers. The STEM Center
is dedicated to changing the way that students view STEM fields
by demonstrating their value in real-life applications. As part
of their STEM Center training, the teachers visit businesses to
see "how engineering and science is applied in our business."
Some of CRG's engineers and scientists volunteered their time
to demonstrate CRG's emerging technologies and explain how skills
such as problem solving and communication are critical to the
STEM workforce. CRG is also a corporate partner in the Dayton
Regional STEM School. (8-4-10)
Essemplex Selected by Material ConneXion
 CRG's
thermosplastic shape memory polymer, Essemplex™,
was accepted into Material ConneXion's library of innovative materials.
It was assessed by a jury panel of creative professionals with
materials experience and voted in by a majority. Essemplex will
now be displayed in four of Material ConneXion's locations: New
York, Bangkok, Cologne and Milan, with a corresponding entry in
their online database.
A thermoplastic shape memory polymer, Essemplex comes in pelleted form and is useful in applications using extrusion or injection molding to form the memorized shape. The final product can then be heated and reshaped multiple times and will return to its memorized shape if left unrestrained.
Material ConneXion is the world's largest innovative materials library, used by Fortune 500 companies, architects, designers and more. CRG already has Veriflex® thermoset shape memory polymer, Veritex™ shape memory composite, and Advantic™ syntactic featured in this library. (7-21-10
